Ashreya became Advika…

It’s really difficult, when you have to name your baby. Too many people and too many options. Its difficult to satisfy all. There is star, numerology, religion, region linked to it.

Here is the stand of each person in the family, while I named my daughter.

Me: her name has to start with “A”, as my name starts with A.

A’sD: people should not tease her because of the name. I am not bothered about anything else.

MIL: which ever name the priest says.

FIL: we shall name her as per birth star.

MOM: I will go with your MIL.

DAD: naming of the baby has to be baby’s parent’s wish. I don’t have any say on it.let her nick name be Bunty ( I love you dad)

SIS: I want the baby to be named Amrutha.( she was quite adamant on this)

Finally we named her as per my wish. Her name is Advika.

I liked the name because…

a) It starts with “A”.

b) Its not so common name, though there is already a blog in this name.

c) My name and baby’s name, both have 6 letters.

d) It’s a Sanskrit name.

e) Its meaning is also good. It means ” unique girl”. Someone who thinks and works differently.

f) My husband liked the name( surprisingly)

g) And finally, I didn’t keep the name according to my MOM or MIL or FIL’s wish.

Note: according to birth star, we need to name her with starting letter “ CHO”. And the priest suggested “Cholika”. It is supposed to be Goddess name. I know, everybody thinks of the song “ choli ke peche” after listening to the name. so, it was easy for me reject MIL and FIL’s selection. And convincing MOM and SIS was little difficult.

I welcome you here! My blog is primarily a blank paper with chronicles of my everyday thoughts and happenings around me spilling like colours. It has various hues, bright, cheerful at times dark episodes of my life. I like to speak a lot and tell stories, but rarely find patient listeners. So, here I am venting out, everything crossing my mind. it is also a record book of my little Barbie’s antics and growth. It is just not about the baby ,but also helps me to keep track of fights and special moments with husband, in-laws and friends. I am an Architect by profession working for an Govt. away from husband because of job location. I love writing, painting, reading and cooking (occasionally).I like roaming around and window shopping. But, now unable to move even an inch outside, because of my daughter. I am originally from Andhrapradesh and have lived in Tamilnadu for 25 years and now back in Andhra. So you will find mix of words from both the languages and me trying to settle down in this new place. Thanks for stopping by. I would love to hear from you. Please email me at

  1. I can imagine how difficult it can be to consider everybody’s interests and wishes and come up with a name agreeable to all! Advika is a beautiful name! I thought your daughter’s name was Ashreya. 🙂

  2. Interesting…naming a child can be so stressful, right? the immediate stress apart, the one that comes from you child later on if they don’t like the name. I on my part, think my parents selected a better name for my sister than me. Then Amma sat me down and told me the story behind how she named me what she did..that she had the name in her head long before she was married! That just made the name special..I think Mama’s stories make most embarrassing moments in life seem more special and worth it! Your blog post might be the one that Advika holds close to her heart whenever she thinks about her name..:)

    1. welcome here journomuse.. hope advika likes her name after she grows up.. in fact i was named after my mom read a famous novel. she was so carried away with the character that she wanted me to be like her and named me.
